Create an Outdoor Living Room
We’re so lucky in Australia to have a beautiful climate that let’s us enjoy year-round outdoor entertaining. And there’s nothing like an outdoor living room to really relax and unwind outdoors!
This trend of creating outdoor living spaces is on the rise so today we’re sharing the ingredients for a stylish and functional outdoor space.
1. Start with outdoor furniture
Like with most spaces, it’s best to begin styling with the largest items – your furniture – and to get the layout right before you begin introducing decorative pieces.
This outdoor living room is an extension of the indoor living space so it was important to get the layout right and not block the indoor-outdoor flow. Orienting the sofa to look inwards and the two armchairs either side creates a conversational seating arrangement that looks inviting from inside.
We love the sleek design of the Maldives Outdoor Lounge Setting which is made from powder coated aluminum and cushions upholstered in weather-resistant fabric.
2. Anchor the space with a rug
Just like indoor living rooms, outdoor spaces look great with a rug – helping to create the sense of a zone and tie your look together.
You can find a wide range of affordable outdoor rugs on the market today and we selected a black and grey rug to fit with our minimalist space.
3. Cluster plants
Plants bring life to a space and by mixing foliage colours and shapes, you can bring added interest to your outdoor living room.
You can also add interest by mixing your pots – just try to keep a similar colour palette or shape so there’s a common element.
4. Layer cushions and throws
Have fun with your cushion styling and look for bold prints or pops of colours. Try mixing shapes and sizes too. You can find a wide range of outdoor cushions at your local Super Amart store.
A blanket or throw also looks great draped over a chair and is ideal for when the sun sets and the temperature drops.
5. Finish with decorative pieces
Outdoor lanterns, candles or a succulent garden like we’ve used on the coffee table, will finish off your outdoor area.
You could also DIY your own outdoor décor by filling a jar with LED fairy lights or creating a concrete planter that you fill with small plants.
